Introduction

  • This instruction is for painting your car wheels color by using spray methods such as the plasti-dip which is easiest and cheapest way to apply new color on wheels or other methods. Many of readers may consider that painting wheels will be hard to do by themselves, but it is not. This instruction is easy to follow and contains useful information to give your car's wheels a brand new look without using much money. Readers do not require any skills for an instruction and the process will be less than two hours. I’m going to tell you through the process step-by-step know if you never paint your wheels before. If you have done it before in the past, you may learn new tips.

Step 1: What Should I Know Before I Start an Instruction?

Before we start an instruction, we should know about basic knowledge of car’s trim. As you see a picture, car’s trim is the combination of Body panel, Primer, Basecoat, and Clearcoat. The definition of Primer is to protect Body panel and helps Basecoat to apply smoothly. Basecoat contains the visual properties of color and is usually the one referred to as the paint. Clearcoat is glossy and transparent coatings that protect Basecoat from ultraviolet.

Tip

  • If your wheels are old, I recommend you to apply Primer, basecoat, and clear coat. However if your wheels are barely new, you can choose either applying primer or not.

Step 2: Where Is Perfect Place to Do?

For starting an instruction, readers must consider the place to progress an instruction. A best place is the garage but if you are trying to do it on outside, you must consider the weather such as a temperature (not too low) and the wind.

Step 3: Methods That Readers Need to Purchase

1) Three or four spray paint cans (for Basecoat)

2) One or two glossy paint cans (for Clearcoat)

3) One or two Primer cans. (If you apply)

4) Wheel cleaner ( If you didn’t go to car-wash last three days)

5) One or two towels

6) Two big boxes (to cover your car trim)

7) Four trash bags (prefer big bags)

8) Big tapes (to protect tires from any over-spray)

9) Safety mask and gloves

Step 4: Clean Your Wheels

By using the wheel cleaner and towels, clean your wheels slowly. It is important to clean each edge of your wheels (as shown as a picture). Do not just clean front face of wheels.

Step 5: Mask the Brake System, Tires, and the Body Trim.

As shown as pictures, stretch trash bags and attach them into wheels. It is important to mask the brake system perfectly. By using big tapes, cover your tires perfectly. Make sure you do not attach tapes on edge of wheels. Last, attach two big boxes between tires and body trim. Before using big boxes, cut the boxes as vertically to attach easily.

Caution

  • make sure trash bag doesn’t touch behind of a wheel at all. If it touches, it ruins the paint after the paint dry.

Step 6: Apply Primer on Wheels

If you’re wheels are barely new, you can skip this procedure

  1. Before applying Primer-coat, shake a primer can hardly and spray on any paper to see how it comes smoothly. Now spray a primer can on wheels. Do not spray it on wheels at close distance. The best distance is one feet away from a wheel. Focus on each corners and each edge of wheels during a procedure.
  2. If you finish first ply, wait 20 minutes until it gets dried.
  3. Re-apply Primer coat on wheels as same routine.

Caution

Do not spray too much on a wheel during the first time. If you spray too much, it rolls down and may have bad result.

Step 7: Apply Basecoat on Wheels

  1. Before applying Basecoat, shake a basecoat can hardly and spray any paper to see how it comes smoothly. Now spray a basecoat can on wheels. Focus on each corners and each edge of wheels during a procedure. Again, do not spray it on wheels at close distance. The best distance is one feet away from a wheel.
  2. If you finish first ply, wait 15-20 minutes until it gets dried.

  3. Re-apply Basecoat on wheels as same routine. Make sure you spray all of edges and corners at this time.

  4. If you finish second ply, wait 15-20 minutes until it gets dried.

  5. Re-apply Basecoat on wheels as same routine.

  6. Wait 20 minutes until it gets dried.

Caution

Do not spray too much on a wheel during the first time. You have three procedures to cover your wheels that mean “No need to rush."

Step 8: Apply Clearcoat (Glosscoat)

If you desire wheels to look glossy, apply Glosscoat. If you desire your wheels to look like matte, apply Clearcoat.
