Introduction: Paper Quilling Typography | Dual Colors Outline

Last December (2021) my friend ask me to make a paper quilling typography for her wedding on January. I was so excited knowing that great news. She requested me to make a typography of her name and her husband's using two colors: pink and dark blue. While usually I only used thicker white paper strip for the outline, I felt challenged by her request. So in this ible I will show you how I made her request come true :D

Supplies

In this project, I used:

  • 80 gsm white paper (base paper)
  • 0.5 paper strips (dark blue and pink) (various colors for the flowers)
  • Sakura Gelly Roll Metallic Gold
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Glue aplicator
  • PVAc glue (white/wood glue)

Step 1: Sketch the Outline

Draw your own outline or print in faded color so it won't showed too much. I draw the outline using pencil, and using type font "Lobster" on a 80 gsm white paper.

Step 2: Prepare the Dual Colors

Prepare two colors of paper strips. I used dark blue and pink. Place one strip above the other and apply a little of glue only on the tip of the paper strip to make both strips stay in place.

Step 3: Hole of Letter

I always start the quilling process from the inner circle like the hole of letter "d" and "a". I usually apply the glue on the outline (base paper) first using a glue aplicator, then arrange the paper strip on it.

Step 4: The Rest of the Outline

After the hole part of the letters, continue to the rest of the typography. While in this process, it is possible that we will run out of strip color 1 while the strips color 2 still long. See picture 2 and 3 above to understand how I spliced the pink paper strip.

When we reach the end of the outline and need to cut the paper strip, cut the inside color first. In my project, the inside color is pink so I cut the pink strip first, then cut the blue one by adding some length to close the outline process (picture 4-8).

Step 5: Added Details

I added some floral wreath from paper. You can learn how I made those flowers here. I also added some hand writing to the project using Sakura Gell Roll Metallic Gold.

Finish line: I put the work inside a 3D frame and sent it to my friend. Both my friend and her husband are really happy with the result! :D This might be a good gift idea for your loved ones.
