Introduction: Polymer Christmas Candy Canes

Step 1: Ingredients!
The above image shows the items I used to make the canes you see in this tutorial, mouse over the image to get a better idea of what is optional and what is not.
Polymer Clay:
I used a red Fimo Effects and a translucent Premo Accents for the main cane, the translucent clay adds a touch of realism to the cane, you can however use pretty much any colour you want and I seriously recommend you experiment with colours.
Blade:
I use various razor blades but for this project you can use pretty much any kind of knife including plastic ones if you are doing this with children.
Necklace, earings and ribbon:
Depending on what you plan to do with your canes you will need other bits n pieces, the ribbon can be used to good effect if you want to hang them off a tree.

Step 2: Preparing Your Clay
To start simply make your clay into the above shapes, Note the 8 thin strips of red, 2 of them are thicker.
When making the 6 thin pieces make them as thin as possible and when I say thin I mean really really thin, all of the bits of clay above are just over an inch long, you can make them shorter or use less clay if you want, once you have made one then making more will become a breeze.

Step 3: Building the Cane
Place the 2 thicker pieces on opposite sides of the white/base colour piece, press them firmly in, don't be afraid.
Step 4: Building the Cane (2)
Now place 3 of the extra thin pieces on each opposite sides as above, press them in nice and firmly. If the cane is going to mess up on you its at this point, note the gap between the thinner stripes, if you place them too close they will blend in the next step and although you will still end up with a cane it won't look quite as nice.
Step 5: Rolling the Cane
Now to roll it out, start off gently at first, it will feel a little bumpy as you are rolling it, check it every so often to make sure nothing is going wrong, keep rolling it until it looks like the second picture.
Step 6: Making Baby Canes!
To finish it off simply twist the cane and then shape it like above.
This is the point where you can now work on the size of your canes, if you simply cut a piece off and roll it out you can achieve smaller and smaller canes. To make a pair of earrings cut off 2 pieces the same size and roll them until they are the desired size.

Step 7: The Finishing Touches
Now that you have made up a cane or two you can do all sorts with them, be sure to experiment! The blackish and white cane in the first image was made using some scrap clay I had lying around so it is a great way to use up those odds n ends.
