Introduction: Pucket Game - How It's Made

Hi everyone,

and welcome to my very first Insctructable.

In this instructable I will explain how I made this super fun game for all ages: Pucket.

I made this instructable in two parts, a fancy one for everyone who has acces to the right tools and an easy one for everyone with limited tools. This last one, you can very easily make with your kids if you like.

If I missed anyhting or if you have any questions or suggestions feel free to send me an e-mail: info@atelierqube.be

Rules of the game:

For smaller kids: Get all of your pucks to the other side.

For all ages: Get all of the pucks to the other side.

Both players count down from 3 and yell GO. Let the mayhem begin! :)

Have fun building and even more fun playing the game!

Supplies

I made this entire project with birch plywood (18mm) since I had some left from an old project. But you could use whatever you have on hand. Just make sure to adjust the dimensions as you go.

For the fancy one

Materials

1x Bottom piece – 54mm x 43 mm x 18mm

2x Long sides – 576mm x 68mm x 18mm

2x Short sides – 466mm x 68mm x 18mm

1x Centre – 430mm x 50mm x 18mm

2x Elastic/Bungee cord +- 500mm x 5mm minimum (I used 8mm)

Glue

Nails or screws

Varnish and/or wax

16x Puck – 40 mm dowel

Optional for the pucks: 40mm holesaw

Optional for hiding the screws: 8mm dowel

Want extra fancy dowels: dowel cutter for custom dowels

Tools

Tablesaw

Chopsaw

Lathe or holesaw for custom pucks

Drill

Router (only needed for the round-over)

Screwdriver or impact driver (if you use screws)

Hammer or nailgun (if you use nails)

Step 1: The Fancy One

The fancy model comes with mitred corners, inlay bottom, strong centre with tongue and groove connection and a round over for each player for a soft touch while playing.

You will need the following pieces: (First image)

1x Bottom piece – 54mm x43 mm x 18mm (the thickness depends on your material)

2x Long sides – 576mm x 68mm x 18mm

2x Short sides – 466mm x 68mm x 18mm

1x Centre piece – 430mm x 50mm x 18mm

and 2x Elastic/Bungee cord +- 500mm (I used thickness 8mm)

Once you have everything cut to length it's time to start shaping them: (second image)

**The exact measurements for all the pieces are found on the third image.

After cutting all the base pieces, we’ll start with the easy one – the centre.

The centre piece: Make a ‘goal’ right in the middle of the piece with an opening of 50mm by 20mm. Bigger is easier, smaller is harder.

For the sides: make a lip on the bottom, 18mm high and 9mm deep, using your router or tablesaw. (Or the thickness of you bottom board and half the thickness of your sides.) And mitre the corners at 45°.

Extra for the long sides: make a groove right in the middle. The width depends on your material, for me it was 18mm. Next make 2 holes at either end of the sides to put the elastic/Bungee cord through.

Extra for the short piece: Round over the middle part so it’s easier on the touch while playing. Sanding the sharp corners will work just as well.

Putting everyhing together:

Once everything is cut and shaped to it's final form we can start assembling.

Using glue and a band clamp you can easily make the puzzle. If you want extra strength you could add nails trough the bottom to secure everything even more.

Once everything is dry the last thing to do is wax the bottom piece, so everything slides as smooth as possible.

The pucks:

There are several ways to make the pucks.

The easiest way is too cut them to size using a 40mm dowel. I made mine +-18mm in height.

An other easy way is too use a holecutter with the right size. That's what I did.

Third and probably the most complicated, is to turn your own pucks on the lathe.

Step 2: The Easy One

The easy one should be -you guessed it- easy to make. I made the design as simple as possible so you could make this with as little tools as possible. You could also make this with kids. Let them decorate the pieces so they have their very own custom pucket-arena!

You will need the following pieces: (First image)

1x Bottom piece – 54mm x 43 mm x 18mm (the thickness depends on your material)

2x Long pieces – 540mm x 50mm x 18mm

3x Short pieces – 394mm x 50 mm x 18mm

and 2x Elastic/Bungee cord +- 500mm (I used thickness 8mm)

Shaping:

Probably the hardest part of this version is the centre piece: Make a ‘goal’ right in the middle of the piece with an opening of 50mm by 20mm. Bigger is easier, smaller is harder.

** If you don't have the tools to cut the 'goal', you could make the center piece in 2 parts. Just leave a little room in between for the puck to pass. Again, the bigger the easier.

After cutting the long pieces to size, make 2 small holes at each end for the screws. And repeat this step for the screws in the middle

Sand over any sharp corners (before customizing the arena).

Assembly:

Put the center piece and the shorter pieces at the right place, hold everything tight together and screw in the screws.

Turn everything upsidedown and screw everything together from the bottom.

The last thing to do is wax the bottom piece, so everything slides as smooth as possible.

The pucks:

There are several ways to make the pucks.

The easiest way is too cut them to size using a 40mm dowel. I made mine +-18mm in height.

An other easy way is too use a holecutter with the right size. That's what I did.

Step 3: Extra Fancy Pucks

If you made it this far, I have a bonus for you! :)

Extra fancy pucks:

There are several ways to make extra fancy pucks:

- Glue up your own wooden panels from leftovers and make all kinds of colored pucks using a holecutter or a jig saw.

- Glue some different kinds of wood together and turn your own pucks on the lathe.

- Pucks you see on the photo:

Relatevily easy IF you have the right tools: You'll need a holecutter and a dowel cutter.

I've cut the pucks to size using the hole cutter and then using the dowel cutter I made some dowels out of skateboardwood and just plugged them in my pucks. These look superb if you ask me ;)
