I was helping a friend clean out her garage and she wanted all of the 'junk' taken to the dump. One piece was a bed with a head board that had shelves. I decided I would repurpose the head board and use it as a book shelf for my living room. It was short enough to put in front of a large window but long enough to hold a lot of books!

Step 1: Clean and Remove Cobwebs

I wiped down all surfaces and removed all the cobwebs.

Step 2: Add Legs and Fill Holes

There were some holes for mounting the rails that needed to be filled, so I used wood pegs and hammered the pegs into the holes. I added the metal plates drilled pilot holes and attached the vintage furniture legs.

Step 3: Add Wood Trim

I also had some 1/4 round wood trim (From the same garage clean up) I nailed to the front of each shelf.

Step 4: Paint and Let Dry

Using some paint that I had from when I touched up the exterior of my house, I painted the shelf and let it dry.

Step 5: Move It in and Fill It Up!

I added some books, magazines and a small radio for my relaxing evenings reading or listening to my favorite radio show. All of this was done with no trips to the hardware store, no dollars spent out of my pocket during the day. Recycling and using supplies already on hand was really rewarding and knowing I kept something out of the land fill was an added bonus.
