Introduction: Inexpensive Red Riding Hood Fur-Lined Hood

The challenge I gave myself was to make an inexpensive red riding hood costume completely from sourced/found garments.

This is the hood.

I also wanted to make a costume where each piece could conceivably pass for a "regular" article of clothing. So, in my imagination, this hood could be worn by itself with "regular" clothes on a winter day.

All of the garments used were sourced, then upcycled into the "new" garment.

All garments were bought at the PTA thrift store in Chatham County. Buy List: Two sweaters, Belt, and jacket. Total Cost: $7, sweaters were each on sale for $1, regularly $2; belt was 1; jacket was $4.

Items Needed:

Two red sweaters

Belt

Jacket with fur-lined hood

Thread

Sewing Machine

Scissors

Step 1: Start With Two Sweaters

Buy your sweater from a thrift store or get them out of a free pile.

One sweater chosen for a detailed collar, one chosen for hood.

Step 2: Cut and Sew

Cut the collar off your fancy sweater.

Cut the hood off your hooded sweater.

Pin them together.

Sew them together.

Step 3: Sew on Belt

Keeping belt whole, sew belt to front and back of sweater.

Step 4: Remove Hood From Jacket

Remove hood from jacket.

Hem hood.

Pin jacket hood to inside of sweater hood.

Sew together.

Step 5: Sew Red Sweater Hood to Jacket Hood

Pin red sweater hood to jacket hood.

Sew together.

Step 6: Admire Your Finished Project

Admire.

Wear.
