Introduction: Simple Adjustable Dumbbells Using Concrete
Hey guys in this article I will be showing you how to make an inexpensive pair of adjustable dumbbells using concert and easily available recycled things. The dumbbells made in this project has an adjustable weight attachment it can be used as a 2kg dumbbell if you need to increase the weight you just have to add an extra plate which makes it 4kg. The same principle can be adopted to achieve any kind of weight as per your choice. And let me assure you this is damn cheap than those fancy ready available dumbbells.
Supplies
1.Cement
2.Sand
3.Rocks
4.Plastic bowl
5.Threaded rod of any diameter (I have used 8mm )
6.Some washer
7.A couple of hexagonal nuts that fit your threaded rod
8.Metal pipe (I have used my old curtain rod)
Step 1: Making Concrete Mould
Take a plastic round jar of the desired size and then add cement, sand and rocks in the ratio 1:1:1. Mix the concrete mixture well by adding water till the mixture becomes uniformly consistent. Remove if any air bubbles by shaking the jar, this also makes the mixture settle well. Now repeat the same 3 more times .let all the 4 moulds dry for a couple of days Remember to add plenty of water which increases the bond strength.
Step 2: Handle for the Dumbbell
To make the handle I have recycled my old curtain rods which is approximately 1 inch in diameter. You can use any kind of metal pipe of your desire diameter according to your grip. cut this metal pipe to a length of 10cm. Take the threaded rod and cut them into a length of 20cm. Place the threaded rod inside the metal pipe and make sure the metal pipe is at the middle portion of the threaded rod. Make a simple cement and sand mixture by adding water. This mixture is then poured into the metal pipe such that the threaded rod remains at the centre and when dried it the metal pipe and threaded rod becomes a single unit.
Step 3: Time to Remove Moulds From the Jar
Once all the moulds are completely dried remove them from the plastic jar. Now use a drill of the same diameter as the threaded rod to drill a hole exactly at the centre of each mould. Now use some sandpaper to scrap unwanted and excess deposits on the surface of the mould to get a better finishing. Same as to be done the handlebar where cement mixture is pored at the centre Make sure the cement mixture inside the pipe holding threaded rod is rock solid.
Step 4: Final Assembly
Take your handle unit to insert two moulds on each side add a washer and a hexagonal nut and tighten it. Do the same for the other side. Depending on the required weight either add or remove the moulds accordingly. Your Homemade inexpensive dumbbells are ready to use. Use the same method to make as many dumbbells as you want with various weights. Since you have stuck till the end of the project please do vote for my project to make better builds.
