Introduction: Spring Loaded XC Retractable Spikes

The goal of the project is to make the spikes retractable. In Cross Country, we run on grass, dirt, pavement, and many other surfaces. When not on a permeable surface such as grass, it is easy to damage/dent the insert spikes. By using a spring system, i was able to make my running spikes retract the inserts when the runner reaches a hard surface (pavement for example).

Step 1: Taking Apart the Shoe

I used a Nike Victory XC spike that is used for the sport of cross country. The first step of the process was to remove the inner sole. From the I could begin drilling the holes for the spikes...

Step 2: Drilling the Holes

After taking apart the shoe, I began to drill the holes where the former threads used to be. In place will be springs attached to the inserts.

Step 3: Attaching the Spikes to the Springs

After this step, the shoe is able to retract the spikes when force is applied to them.

Step 4: Testing and Evaluation

The project was a success. The spikes retract into the shoe when force is applied.
