Introduction: Super Easy Coat Rack

About: Just getting started woodworking. Looking for new ideas and sharing some of my own.

I made this coat rack and glove/hat holder as I was tired of having clothing items all over counter/table/floor or wherever my kids decided to drop them. It's the first project I've designed myself, but it was super easy and a great beginner piece.

Step 1: Measure

Measure the area you want to put the coat rack. Mine was about 14 high by 28 wide.

Step 2: Cut List

1x4 by 27 1/2" -top
1x4 by 13" -side (2 each)

1x4 by 26" -shelf
1/2" plywood 27 1/2" wide by 13 3/4" high -back
1x4 by 8 1/4" - divider
I used plywood because I had it available and made it much easier to hide the screws.

Step 3: Roman Ogee

This was my first ever time using a router. It came out well in my opinion. You wouldn't need to route the edge, but I thought it'd give it a nice touch. I routed the sides of the top as well.

Step 4: Cut Sides

I used a jigsaw to give the sides a slight curve. You'll want it about an inch below your shelf (which I put at 8 1/4 below top) as it makes it easier to hang up coats. I basically freehanded with pencil until I liked the look then cut and traced it onto the second piece.

Step 5: Assembly

I mounted the top and sides to the plywood for the simple reason that it would give the cubbies enough depth to hold the hat and gloves. Putting the 1 1/4 inch screws in through the back made them not visible and very easy installation. You'll want to buy the hooks you'll be using first and make sure there is enough space for them and a gap to fit your coat. Pre-drill the holes!

Step 6: Pocket Holes

I used my Kreg Jr to pocket drill the top and shelf. This added to the durability as my 5 and 8 year old are tough on furniture. I also didn't want anything for the gloves or hat to catch on and rip.

Step 7: Stain and Hang

I used a pre-stain conditioner and Minwax Ipswich Pine. I haven't put a urethane coat on it, but I may do that as I did it on a different piece and love the way it came out.

Mount:

I just held the piece where I wanted it on the wall and pre drilled 4 holes right through the back. Then set the piece down and installed the plastic wall anchors. I hand tightened screws as it's tough to get a drill in the space I put the holes and I didn't want to over-tighten. Attach the hooks you want and Enjoy!
