Introduction: Survival Straws How To:
These straws can be used as a waterproof container for some small items, such as salt, pepper, spices, sugar, flower, even a fire starter, you can also use it to hold rub on medicine such as Neosporin. In this instructable I will be showing you how to make these and what you can put into them.
Step 1: Materials
1. Straws
2. Lighter.
3. Pliers
4. Scissors
5. Anything you want to put into the straw ( spices, Vaseline soaked cotton balls, etc.)
6. Screwdriver (only be used to push cotton ball into straw)
Step 2: Cut Straws
Cut about a 2-inch section of the straw away and use this piece. Cut as many pieces as you need, if you have extra then you can always save them for later.
Step 3: Melting and Stuffing for Fire Starter
Take your pliers, your lighter, and your straw and take them away from the other materials to keep your work space clean. Grip one end of the 2-inch section of your straw in the pliers, leave a little gap in between the end and the pliers. Melt the end of the straw a little and move your pliers down to the melted section and close it off by gripping it in the pliers. Make sure that there aren't any holes in the seal and continue. Take the Vaseline, the cotton ball, the section of the straw, and the screwdriver and take a little Vaseline on your finger and work it into the cotton. After you have done that take the Vaseline cotton ball and push it into the straw, it may be easier to use the screwdriver. Now make sure that the other end is clear of the cotton and seal it with the pliers and the lighter.
Step 4: Test
I put the straw into a bowl of water and left it there for a good 20 seconds, and submerged it. Then I took the straw out and snipped off one end. Now the big part. I pulled a little cotton out of the straw so there was a little poking out. Next I took out my lighter and proceeded to light the cotton. Make sure you have some water nearby just in case. Luckily I did not burn my house down or burn my fingers off, but I did manage to light the cotton !
Step 5: Spices
Take another straw and seal one end like before. Now take one of your spice containers and push the open end of the straw into the container and wiggle it around so the spice works its way in. Do this until there is a little room in the straw and seal the other end like before. Do this as many times as you need/want to until you are satisfied.
Step 6: Finish
There are many things you can put into the straws such as spices, fire starters, medicine, even liquids like mouthwash. In summary this is a very useful piece of survival, and camping gear, to have in your pack, it is compact, lightweight, and very useful, but to be honest it is very simple. I hope this will help you out and I will post more useful and fun Instructables in a little while.
