Introduction: Tin Can Planter
Keep a few tin cans out of the landfill by upcycling it into something funky for your outdoor space.
Step 1: What You'll Need
- Tin can
- Craft paint
- Hammer
- Nail
- Awl
- Spool of wire
- Wire cutters
- Needle nose pliers
- Preval Sprayer
- Brick or large rock
Step 2: Make Drainage Holes
Using the nail, hammer three drainage holes on the bottom of the can. If you're planting succulents, make the holes a bit larger with an awl.
Step 3: Prepare to Hang the Can
Flip the can over, and place a brick or large rock inside.
About a half inch from the top, hammer a hole onto the side of the can, using a nail. Make the hole larger, if necessary, using the awl.
Next, make another hole on the opposite side of the can.
(This is where you'll later attach a wire to hang the planter.)
Step 4: Get the Preval Sprayer Ready
Thick paints: For latex or quality acrylic paints, add 1 oz. of paint and 2 oz. of water to the Preval Sprayer jar.
Thin paints: If using watery craft paint, add 1.5 oz. of paint and 1.5 oz. of water to the jar.
Cap, shake and attach the spray can. Then, spray an even layer of paint onto the can, allowing it to dry between coats.
Step 5: Make the Wire Hanger
When the paint is dry, cut a 3-foot piece of wire and fold it from the middle onto itself. Feed one of the wire from the outside of the can to the inside. Use your pliers to twist a knot into the wire.
Then, feed the other end of the wire from the outside of the can to the inside. Twist another knot to secure it.
Step 6: Plant a Succulent
Succulents thrive in warm, humid climates. If you're in such an area, add coarse dirt with perlite and small gravel to the can. Dig a hole and lightly place the succulent plant into the dirt. Soak with water only when the dirt is dry. Enjoy!
