Turn Your Fence Into a Gate With 17$

If you need to move large items(Go Kart, Picnic table, or a vehicle)in and out of your back yard here is a cheap and very easy way, with 17$(if you don't have to buy any tools).

Step 1: Plan (what Do You Want Bring Through the Gate)

How long do you need the fence to be? You can not take out the main post they are cemented into the ground. If you do your fence will have no support. I needed a minimum of 88"(inches), my main posts were 95" apart...I'm in luck!

Step 2: Tools and Materials

All of these items can be found @Lowes or Home Depot.
- 4" heavy barrel bolts Qty 2
- 4" removable pin board hinge Qty 2 !ALWAYS MEASURE FOR YOUR PROJECT!
- hack saw(for wood)
- drill with phillips bit
- extension cord
- hammer
- tape measure
- gloves
- extra wood screws(the hinge and barrel bolt come with screws)
- something to mark with, such as a pencil
- shovel and/or rake
- ladder(if the fence is too high)

Step 3: Remove Panels and Mark for Cuts

Using your hammer or pry bar, pry off and remove the panels where you would like to cut. This is not a science, there is no right or wrong just make sure you pull the correct panels off to get the correct length. !EVERY FENCE IS DIFFERENT SO USE COMMON SENSE WHEN DOING THIS PROJECT!

Next, measure and mark at what point you want the gate hinges to swing and the barrel bolt to latch.

Step 4: Cutting the Fence

Where you marked the line to cut, using the hack saw, cut down that line at a 50 to 60 degree angle as shown, so the gate doesn't bind when it's opened or closed.

Use the rake and/or shovel to remove the grass and dirt under the fence to allow the gate to freely swing open and close.

Step 5: Installing the Fence With Hardwear

Remember the Panels we removed, we will use them as a spacer between the bottom of the fence and the ground. this is done to elevate the fence to the proper height so the hardware lines up. !Take your time on this part! You might have to add and remove the panels (spacers) to achieve the correct height.

To mount the hardware, stabilize the cut portion of the fence back into its original space. As you see in the picture, the swinging portion of the fence is a bit higher to give the fence swing clearance. Using the drill and supplied screws, mount the hinges and barrel bolts.

Step 6: Reinstalling the Panels

Use the additional screws to install the panels back onto the fence in the original spots. Mount the panels ONLY to one side(either onto the stationary part or swinging part) not both or the fence won't open. Swing the gate open to see where to mount it.

Step 7: Take a Step Back and Check Out Your New Fence Gate

You shouldn't even be able to tell that you did anything to the fence.
