Introduction: Unique Address Sign
I have place in Yuma, Arizona, where I spend my winters. When I bought the place it had a tin garden type shed. The shed is 10 X 12' which is a great size for a small shop. The problem was it was too short and I kept banging my head going in and out. Now I can not afford to many blows to the head. I decided to lift the shed 1'. (I will do an instructable on the shed lift later.) As a result of the shed lift, the metal sliding doors would no longer work. I had to replace them with a single plywood door. I thought, being in the desert, it would be a neat idea to cut out a cactus on the door, put green plexi-glass behind the cactus cut out and light it from behind at night, it does look pretty cool at night. I saved the cactus cut out.
I know, I know, when is he going to get to the address sign. Well here we go. We bought a second place a couple of doors down as a rental unit. It did not have an address sign, so here is what I did.
I took the cut out of the cactus and painted it green. I then went to Mexico, which is about 10 minutes away and bought some ceramic number tiles. you could also get them from most big box hardware stores. I laid the ceramic tiles on the cactus and traced around them. I then cut that out of the centre of the cactus. On the back side of the cactus I screwed on a 1/4" piece of plywood as a backing for the ceramic ties. I then glued the tiles into the hole I had cut and put clear calking around the tiles.
In the bottom of the cactus I drilled two holes and friction fit two pieces of round steel about 8" long. I then bought a cheap plastic plant pot and put the cactus into the pot, filled it about 3/4 full of sand to hold the cactus and covered the rest with rocks. It turned out way better than I thought it would and have had a ton compliments on it.
You can use your imagination and use a theme that fits the area you live in. Hope you like the idea.
