Introduction: Baked Alaska, Gordon Ramsay Style

The most delicious layered cake topped with vanilla ice cream under a blanked of zesty meringue. Warning: a blowtorch is involved.

Step 1: Ingredients

Meringue
10 tbsp sugar
4 tbsp water
drop of lemon juice
2-3 egg whites

vanilla ice cream (or any kind)
sponge cake

Step 2: Make the Meringue

To make the meringue, first place the sugar and water in a saucepan and heat over medium heat. Stir until all the sugar is dissolved. Allow the liquid to boil for 2-3 minutes until you have a clear syrup.

Place egg whites and lemon juice into a bowl. Using a hand mixer, beat the egg whites for around 2-3 minutes until they form into stiff peaks. When the egg whites stick to the whisk, or won't fall out of the bowl, they are ready.

Slowly whisk the syrup into the egg whites and continue to whisk for an additional 1 minute or until the meringue looks glossy and thickened.

Step 3: Prepare the Cake and Ice Cream

Using a round cookie cutter, slice off two portions of sponge cake per serving. Repeat for the ice cream, but just cut one circle.

Works best if you slice off a thin slab of ice cream and mold it from there.

In the end you should two circles of cake per circle of ice cream.

Step 4: Put It All Together

To assemble, put the ice cream on top of one circle of cake. top with another piece of cake.

Once you have your little sandwiches, cover with meringue.

Either pipe on using a decorating bag or smear it on with a knife.

Step 5: Finish With a Flame

Lightly singe the outside of your meringue using a blowtorch.

Be careful not to burn the meringue.

Step 6: And Enjoy!
