Introduction: DIY 4K HDR 24 Inch Monitor for Less Than $100
This is how you would go about building your own 4k monitor for less then $100 usd using busted stuff and some 3d printed parts for less than $100 USD.
Some of the 3d printed parts some are optional, others can be substituted with metal or wood deepening on your skill-set, likes and needs. files for the 3d parts are in
For basic display capability you just need the busted lg screen and the panel pulled from a broken Dell All in one, rest of the stuff is optional and it is to add some strength to the panel.
For this monitor I used 27UK650. 27uk600 uses the same controller board but different stand which you'll have to figure out hour to mount. 27uk850 guide would be the same as this one but it comes with more capable board.
Supplies
- one busted LG 27 inch UK series 4K panel, best one is 27KU600/650, but other will work with the right length cables, or different board orientation. Stay away from 32 inch monitors as backlight panels will require custom backlitght cables.
- one MV238QUM-N20 LCD panel from a busted OptiPlex 7440 7450 AIO PC
- one Steelworks 3/4-in W x 3/4-in H x 8-ft L Mill Finished Aluminum Solid Angle from lowes #55966
- one Steelworks 3/4-in W x 8-ft L Mill Finished Aluminum Weldable Trim Channel from lowes #55981
- 3d printed parts some are optional, others can be substituted with metal or wood deepening on your skillset and likes.
- 4 M2 screws for the 3d printed side frames, can be recovered from the old panel (should not be longer than 5mm)
- 4 M2 hex (small head screws) for mounting(should not be longer than 5mm
- 4 M5 screws and nuts (or similar) to mount control board to the
Step 1: Disasembe the Monitor
Power off the monitor, remove the stand if attached and remove any screw in the vesa mount behind the stand.
Depending on the model you get you might have 4 to 5 screws on the back.and they will all be visible.
Pry a guitar pic or something similar between the two parts of the frame and run around the frame to separate the parts.
Step 2: Disconect Cables
As you taking the frame apart place it screen down and remove the back cover, you will end up with the back panel exposed as shown in the image. Disconnect the cables attached to the panel and remove the controls switch.
Step 3:
Carefully remove the control board from the panel buy gently twisting the board to the site. You will feel resistance because control board is sticking to the panel via rubbery, bit oily feeling heat-sink.
Step 4: Bottom and Top Panel Support
Get the U channel aluminum rail and cut to length to be placed on the bottom and top of the monitor to add to the stability of the panel.
Step 5: LCD Backlight Cable
Get the six pin LCD backlit cable, remove the side brackets and plug it into the top left corner of your new panel with blue cable on the right as shown in the image.
Step 6: Add the Frame to the Panel
Get the previously cut U channel rails for the bottom and top of the panel and mount them with the 3d printed parts. Watch for the orientation and make sure that the screw holes match. If everything alights affix the 3d printer sides with the screws that you have recovered from the inside of the busted panel (the back part of the frame is attached to the panel with screws).
Step 7: Cut the Monting Rails
Measure and cut the l rails to the size (545 mm) and measure to mark for the mounting holes, and drill two mounting holes (about 60mm) from both ends. MEASURE TWICE BEFORE DRILLING, and don't drill while attached to the panel.
Step 8: Dry-fit the Mounting Rails
Dry-fit the mounting rails and validate that mounting holes are in proper places and good fit.
Step 9: Fit the Board Housing
With mounting rails in their places measure the distance between rails and the board housing an cut to size. Also mark the center points using the vesa mount on the housing body. Mark and drill the holes to mount the board housing to the mounting rails. Put everything together, install the control board, and install the whole assemble from inside. First one side and then the second. You can also remove the plastic 3d printed frame and assemble it that way too.
Step 10: Connecting Cables
Now that the everything is mechanically put together it is time to connect the cables. Start with the lcd backlight followed by the 30 pin flat cable. this cable is kept in its form using a tough tape, you will have to take the tape of and straiten the cable to get it to the form it needs to be in, kind of l shaped. Connect the cable and tape it to the lcd panel as shown to maintain its form.
Step 11: Monitor Mount
So i realized that, since the back cover of the donor monitor has no value why not use it to for the monitor mount. Cut it to size 220mm x160 mm and fit it into the 3d printed frame and screw the whole assembly to the monitor using vesa mount screws.
Step 12: Last Steps
If you are gong to use original stand, but you do not have back cover from the lg donor monitor you 3d print and use attached mount holder, if you are going to use VESA mount you do not need this, just skip to install the button mounting plate by pushing it under the mounting rail and the bottom U channel rail . Button cable should be feed though the opening in the mounting plate. This step is optional as you can fully control functions of this monitor using LG utilities.
Step 13: Finaly Done
You are done. Envoy your new 4K HDR monitor.
Step 14: Printed Parts
Pars where printed on Creality 10s. For the monitor frame turn the model to 45 degrees to fit the printer, use mirror function to produce second part and use support on the monitor and button mount.
