Introduction: Felt Snowflake Ornaments
Snowflake is nature's art. There are no identical shapes. Create snowflake ornaments that is unique and beautiful.
Each ornament measures about 4 inches. The pattern is located at the end of this tutorials.
Step 1: Materials
- Felt Sheets: White 9" x 12" and 2 Light Blue 9" x 12"
- Iron-on interface (This is optional. It stabilize weak acrylic felt.)
- 4 Clear Gems
- Embroidery floss: Light Blue and Silver
- Beads: Silver / assorted shapes and sizes
- Ribbon or string: About 24" long. Cut it in 4 equal length.
- Poly-fill (not in the picture)
- Pins and needles
- Sharp scissors
- Glue
- Pencil or felt marker
Step 2: Stabilizing Felt With Iron-on Interface.
This step is optional. If you are using acrylic felt, I recommend stabilizing it with iron-on interface. It will be easier to cut.
Step 3: Tracing Pattern and Cutting Felt.
Carefully cut the pattern pieces. Place it on the back side of a white felt (interface side) and trace the pattern with pencil or marker. Carefully cut along the pencil line.
Trace the both sides of the background pattern on blue felt and cut the shape.
Step 4: Embroider
Place the white felt on top of the blue felt. Pin to secure. Thread a needle with two strands of silver embroidery floss. At the middle of snowflake, embroider (running stitch) a circle. Continue stitching branches. Attach a bead when you reach the tip of the branch.
Step 5: Attach a Gem.
Attach a gem in the middle of the snowflake. I used a glue gun. You can use a craft glue.
Step 6: Blanket Stitch
Put the background pieces together. Blanket stitch the edges. When you reach at the top, attach a ribbon or string. Continue stitching. Stuff with poly-fill and close the opening.
You are done with your first snowflake! Now let's make the snowflake #2.
Step 7: Snowflake #2
Follow the same method in the first snowflake. Here I show you how to embroider.
First, stitch inside the snowflake using back stitch. Attach beads.
Next, place the snowflake pattern on the top of the felt. Pin 6 corners of a hexagon. Flip it to the back side and put dots marks at the 6 pinned spots.
Next, stitch using back stitch to make a hexagon shape. Cross stitch around the hexagon. Attach a gem.
Step 8: Snowflake #3
Follow the same method in Snowflake #1. Here I show you how to embroider.
First, find the middle by pinning the pattern placed on top of the felt. Mark the middle.
Next, stitch all around using running stitch.
Next, attach a bead and stitch straight across the middle. Attach another bead. Repeat other two lines.
Attach a gem in the middle.
