Introduction: Inside Out Decoupage Jars

About: I am a conceptual artist, and my DIY projects are mostly inspired by pop culture (movies, music, sports, TV). I mostly specialize in painting, graphic design, drawing, digital photography, performance art, and…

When it comes to color theory, we know how certain colors can connect to certain emotions. And this great new summer movie, Disney Pixar's Inside Out takes that idea to another level. This is one project I wanted to do to honor the movie: rainbow decoupage jars inspired by all 5 main characters from the movie: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust!

Step 1: Getting Started

To complete this colorful project, you need the following items...

5 of each of the following....

  • glass jars
  • colors of tissue paper (in this case, red / blue / yellow / green / purple)
  • wooden letters (A / S / D / J / F)
  • computer print-outs of the Inside Out characters, including their names
  • colors of ribbon

You will also need...

  • Mod Podge
  • sponge brush
  • acrylic paints and paint brushes or spray paint
  • hot glue gun

Step 2: Prep Your Jar

First, if you need to wash and rinse off your glass jars, do so. Once that's done, open each of the jar lids and set them aside.

Step 3: Rip 'Em Up

The next thing is to take your tissue paper and rip it up into small pieces. Now, arrange those pieces by color. You will need to make 5 piles of tissue paper per color: one red, blue, yellow, green and purple. You can also do like how I did and use different kinds of paper textures, like magazine scraps. Just go through your old magazines and cut off just the color parts to add to your piles.

Step 4: Add Color and Character

Now, add a layer of Mod Podge and create your decoupage on your jars. You can even take some old magazines, cut up some of the colored areas and use them for added texture.

Once you've done that, you can now add one of the characters from the movie and its name to your jar.

Just remember this: Red is for Anger, Blue is for Sadness, Yellow is for Joy, Green is for Disgust, and Purple is for Fear.

Step 5: Decorate Your Jar

Now, you're ready to decorate! You can add ribbon to the outside rim of your jar lids for a luminous texture. Also, you can paint the jar lids as well. You can do this step in one of two ways. You can hand paint the jar lids, or if you don't have time, you can also spray paint for a quick color-in!

Finally, add some personalization to your jars by hot gluing the letters of the character's first names on top of the jar lid. Remember: A is for Anger, S is for Sadness, D is for Disgust, J is for Joy and F is for Fear. In addition, make sure that you use the exact same colors as you did with the jar lids for your letters to make them pop out!

Step 6: Finished Jars

And that's all there is to it! Beautiful colors, love the characters, and the personalization as well! With this project, you'll be able to get to know "the little voices inside your head" better!
