Introduction: Neil DeGrasse Tyson Badass Costume

Ah, the internets. An endless source of inspiration and amusement.

My willing boyfriend, who sends this meme on the regular, allowed me to paint him up to go out on the town with me.

While I'm used to the face paint, this was a new experience for him. I'm not going to lie, he didn't love it all the time, but he was a very good sport about it.

For your reference, you can read all you would ever want to know about this meme and more here!

Let's get to it, shall we?

Step 1: The Clothes.

This was pretty simple- all we needed were some white gloves and a long sleeve white shirt.

While looking at the meme, I drew the outlines on the gloves while he was wearing them. I did the same thing with the long sleeve tee so that the gloves and shirt would match up around the wrists.

Overall, this took about 20 minutes.

Step 2: The Face Paint

First step: paint the face, ears, eyebrows, and neck all white. I use waterbased face paint. It took about 2 coats applied with a makeup sponge. Make sure to cover everything!

Second: Do the hair outline from the meme. I did this using black water based face paint and a regular ol' paint brush.

Third: Paint on fake eyebrows and other accents. His original eyebrows were painted over with the white paint. This allows for the drawn on eyebrows to be higher up than his natural ones. Follow the meme as- it's basically a sketch of what you need to do. Also, you can draw outside of the natural nose to give the same expression of Neil in the meme. The chin is also pretty vital, since it will work to adjust the size

Fourth: Eyes. Of course, we could have left his eyes alone and just had him make the expression. OR you can paint them on the lids. This is an extra creepy effect that is really simple to achieve and allows the whole thing to look more 2D. His eyes are closed in most of the pics he was in that night!

Last: The lips and the moustache. Again, I drew over his natural lips to create the expression that Neil makes.

Step 3: Party All Night and Freak People Out With Fake Eyes

His eyes are closed in EVERY ONE of these pics.

Overall the costume was a huge hit, he even won a contest at one of the parties.

The last three images are of the two of us out. Woo hoo!

P.P.S. I was given permission to use his image since I came up with and fabricated the costume.
