Introduction: Shock Box

this is a little toy that delivers a mild shock at the touch of a button
if used as directed this project will give a non-lethal shock that's kind of fun

this project will never need to be plugged into mains voltage
i am never responsible for anything you do


i actually stumbled across this concept via painful accident
i applied power to a transformer then when i turned the power off it shocked me
i tried it ten more times and figured out what what was happening
power was being transformed and then stored in the inductance of the transformer then being released as a shock
(somebody correct me if i'm wrong or they find something smarter)
(knowledge is power)

Step 1: Matreials and Tools

tools:
-knife
-standard screwdriver
-wire cutters
-soldiering iron
-grinder(optional)

materials:
-9V battery snap
-or-
-alligator clips
-ac/dc transformer
-clickey switch
-2ft light grade wire

the transformer needs to be at least 5V and 300ma. just nothing wimpy.
a 9V battery is preferred but you shouldn't use anything stronger or you could hurt yourself.
you can use the battery clip or the alligator clips, either is fine.

Step 2: Open the Transformer

i used a grinder to go around the edge of the the transformer
the grinder will shoot hot molten plastic at you so use safety glasses
you can use a screwdriver or a knife but it will take longer
try not to completely destroy the case or the insides
cut the transformer away from the circuits and try to keep the wires long

discard the circuitry or keep it but you wont need it for this project
keep the case to put the transformer back into
pull out the ac power prongs and save them for later use

Step 3: Cutting the Transformer

find the ground wires on the secondary coil and cut the rest off

if your transformer has three wires(most do) use the first and second wire but cut the third off
(the third and first are interchangeable but only use one of them not both)

be sure you're working on the secondary coil
cut off the primary coil wires because you don't need them

the secondary(output) coil has fewer wraps thicker wire
the primary(input) coil has more wraps of thinner wire

Step 4: Wiring

cut a the following lengths of wire
double strand:
-8 in
-6in
-2in
single strand:
-2in

strip all the wires 3/4 of an inch on all ends

connect all the wires according to the diagram
you can solder the connections but it's not necessary

Step 5: Conection

connect the two leftover wires to the transformer leads
apply electrical tape to all of the stripped ends
cut a hole in the case and slip the wires and the switch through the hole

i melted the switch to the case with my soldiering iron but you can attach it however you like

Step 6: Closing and Usage

melt the back of the case to the front piece with a soldiering iron
or...
you could just wrap the entire thing in duct tape

usage

connect the battery to the clips
it doesn't matter if its backwards because were working with non-polar electricity
i completely made that up but it doesn't matter +/-

take the shock terminals in your pointer middle and thumb fingers
but make sure they don't short out or you wont get any shock

press the switch for half a second and when you let go it will shock your fingers

the harder you squeeze your fingers the more shock you get
you can press the switch rapidly on and off to get a rapid and slightly painful shock

you can also try a trick with your friends
make a circle of friends as many as you can get
the first friend and the last in the circle each grab one shock terminal
and you click the button
all of your friends will scream and you'll just laugh at them
