Introduction: Mr Potato Head Donuts

About: My name is Luis, I am from Barcelona and for the last years I've developed a curious obsession merging food and rapid prototyping. To have a unique and customized eating experience.

A few weeks ago I had this aha moment where I realized I wanted to turn desserts into cute characters. What can I say I like cute things.

After a few days of HARD thinking, I came up with the idea of merging two awesome things, donuts and mr potato head. I wanted to design and print edible complements for my donuts and turn them into adorable little little friends.

And that's what I did!

I ran into Dunkin Donuts bought a few glazed donuts, took measures and start designing around using Fusion 360.

If you are curious HERE you can check the model I played with.

Step 1: Parts

I printed all the stl files attached using my sugar printer. I know it not easy to have access to one of these but my guess is that this would work too with plastic and some supports.

My first design for the glasses was too fancy, and my printing skills could not handle it. They broke over and over... so I just did a different design, a BIGGER one! :)

One of the things that I have learn from putting together this little guys is that using fresh donuts helps a lot! since they are more tender its easier to poke them with the different complements. If the donut is a little bit tough, I recommend using one of the hands to pre-hole the insets for the glasses otherwise those are really easy to brake. This video has a better image of that.

Step 2: Funny End

3d printed sugar parts are quite fragile. The funny part is that after shooting some pictures and videos I was moving them back to the lab, but....... they never made it both tumbled face down. First I thought they would be totally destroyed. Their glasses did, but not all.

I think the last picture I took from them feels like they both had a tiny fight as food brothers :)

Do you have any idea of what food to turn into a sweet friend?
