Introduction: LED Wooden Christmas Stockings

About: I'm a woodworker who makes fun woodworking projects in my garage and shares them with the world!

I made these LED Wooden Christmas Stockings out of 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood and a standard 8' pine 2x6 board. The LED lights inside are wireless and controlled by one remote. Santa can't miss these!

Supplies and Tools:

One stocking requires two 8"x12" pieces of 1/8" thick Baltic Birch plywood, and one 8"x12" blank glued up from a 2x4 or 2x6 board that is 1.5" thick. Other supplies include sandpaper, wood glue, and twine.

I used the Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine to cut these out. They could also be made using a coping saw, scroll saw, jig saw, or band saw. A drill press could even be used to drill holes for ornament or snowman shapes.

This 5-Pack of LED Puck Lights from Walmart was perfect for my 5 stockings. The lights are wireless and controlled by one remote. Batteries and double-sided tape are included.

Step 1: Design the Front Pieces

I used the Inventables EASEL software to design the stockings. Click here to open my EASEL project. You can create a free trial account to download/print/screenshot the designs, or it's easy to create your own in Word with graphics from a Google Images holiday clipart search. If you are not using a CNC, print your cutting templates and attach to the plywood.

Step 2: Cut the Parts

Cut out the front with the shapes and a solid back piece from the plywood. Then cut out the 1.5" thick side piece from the glued up 2x4 or 2x6 blank.

Step 3: Sanding and Finishing

Sand everything smooth. It's easier to apply paint or finish before it's assembled. Avoid getting paint or finish on the edges where the glue will need to bond to the bare wood. I used clear spray lacquer for a natural wood look.

Step 4: Assembly

If you are using LED strips and need access to the inside of the stocking, this would probably be the best time to insert them before it's assembled. The puck lights I used were easy to insert and stick inside after assembly.

Glue the side piece in between the front and back pieces to make the stocking. Make sure the front piece is facing the correct way. Use clamps or something heavy, like books or a tool box, on top to hold it together while the glue dries.

Step 5:

Use pieces of twine and cup hooks to hang them up. Turn on the lights and enjoy the show. The LEDs really look cool and I like all of the color options and flashing modes that can be changed with the remote.
