Huge Hand-Carved Celtic Wooden Shield. 1000mm in Diameter!

Hi! This is an celtic wooden hand carved shield that i've made myself.

The front of the shield is hand drawn and hand carved depicting two celtic dragons and other celtic symbols.

The diameter of the shield is 1000mm, thickness 25mm and approx 5kg. It is ideal for decorating rooms, sidewalks, cellars or for medieval parades, photo shoots, etc.

Supplies

Materials: Balsa wood, MDF board, wood glue,indigo paper,baking paper, wallnut wood stain, linseed wood oil, natural wood wax, lint-free cloths, sanding paper.

Tools: jig saw, pencil, brushes, hand carving tools, Dremel tool kit (carving mills),Dremel VersaTip 2000-6, Dexter SK5 mini knifes.

Step 1: Preparing the Wooden Base of the Shield and Drawing the Design.

In this step we glue the balsa wooden boards and the MDF round board together using wood glue and then with the help of an jig saw we cut the wood in a round shape.

We draw the design of the shield on baking paper because we can see the drawing even if the paper it's turned on the other side. Behind the baking paper we put some indigo paper and we start outlining the drawings with a pencil . At the end, when we remove the papers we should have the drawings on the wooden board.

Step 2: Let's Start Carving the Wood!

In this part we use the Dremel tool kit and some mills to basically mill the drawing outline on the shiled and then we use some hand carving tools to carve all the details of the wooden shield. I warn you that this will take time.

Step 3: Burning the Wooden Carved Shapes.

With the help of the Dremel Versa Tip 2000-6 gas torch we torch the celtic designs to add a special effect on the wood.

Attention!!! Do not stay with the gas torch in one place for a long time because you risk to destroy all the work. Try to move fast and and keep the burning as much uniform as you can.

Step 4: Sanding the Wood Surface.

This part it's simple but it takes time. Here we need different granulation (220 and 800) sand paper and we start sanding all the wood surface with maximum attention and prepare it for the next step.

Step 5: Staining the Wood.

This part it's quite simple. We take a brush and apply some wallnut wood stain to add a beautifull colour to the wood shield.

Step 6: Applying the Linseed Oil.

This part it's also very simple. We take a brush and start applying the linseed oil on the entire surface of the wood to add extra protection to the wood. The linseed oil helps also for the wood impregnation so in the next step we will use less material.

Step 7: Final Step: Wood Waxing.

This step will take some time. Here we need some lint-free cloths, hand gloves and natural wood wax. We take with the lint-free cloth a small amount of wax and we start applying it in circular movement for extra polish. It's very important to use small amounts of wax and applying it in fine layers.
